Compare two Excel files online

Upload your main list and the report you want to check. See what is missing from either file, what appears twice and where matching amounts differ.

.xlsx, .xls or .csv · up to 2 MB and 5,000 rows each · deleted from memory after 15 minutes

How to compare two Excel files for differences

  1. Upload both files. They don't need the same layout — title rows above the header and differently named columns are fine.
  2. Check the key columns. We pick the columns that look like the same ID in both files (invoice number, order ID, trip number). Change them if needed.
  3. Pick amount columns to compare values for matched rows — for example invoice amount vs amount paid.
  4. Review and download. Rows missing from either file, duplicates and amount differences, as an Excel workbook.

Doing it in Excel instead? The usual approach is XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP on a cleaned key column in both sheets, plus a COUNTIF to find duplicates. It works for one-off checks; it gets fragile when IDs are formatted differently or the files change every week.

Questions

How does it decide which rows match?

It looks for the pair of columns whose values overlap the most and look like IDs (invoice numbers, order IDs, trip numbers). IDs are compared in a normalized form, so INV-0042, inv 42 and INV0042 match. You can change the key columns after the first comparison.

Are my files stored?

No. Files are held in server memory for 15 minutes so you can change columns or download the result, then discarded. They are never written to disk or a database.

What are the limits?

Up to 2 MB and 5,000 rows per file, .xlsx, .xls or .csv. For bigger files, more than two files, or a comparison you run every week, use a free Reconza account.

Is it really free?

Yes — no sign-up, no email. It's a small piece of the reconciliation engine behind Reconza.
